How to calculate Mean, Median, Mode, Range, Minimum, and Maximum
Mean
Add all the numbers in the sample group.
Divide the sum by the amount of numbers.
The answer is the mean (also called the "average").
Example: 1 + 4 + 6 + 7 + 9 = 27 / 5 = 5.4
5.4 is the mean.
Median
Sort all the numbers in a sample from smallest to largest.
Include all repeated numbers when sorting.
Find the middle number. That is the median.
If there is an odd number of samples, the median is the middle number.
If there is an even number of samples, the median is the average of the two middle numbers.
Example A: 5, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 12, 12, 12, 14, 15. Is this an odd or even number of samples? It's odd.
The middle number of elven samples is 6. The 6th number is 12.
The median is 12.
Example B: 1, 3, 4, 4, 5, 6, 6, 8, 8, 10. Is this an odd or even number of samples? It's even.
Add the 5th and the 6th numbers (5+6=11) and divide by 2.
11 / 2 = 5.5. The median is 5.5.
Mode
The number which repeats most often in the sample group is the mode. There may be
more than one mode because some sample numbers may repeat as frequently as others.
Example C: 5, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 12, 12, 12, 14, 15, 19. The mode is 12 because it occurs four times.
Range
The difference between the smallest and the largest numbers in the sample group.
Example D: 5, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 12, 12, 12, 14, 15, 19.
19 - 5 = 14 The range is 14.
Minimum
The smallest number in the sample group.
Example E: 5, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 12, 12, 12, 14, 15, 19.
The smallest number is 5. The minimum is 5.
Maximum
The largest number in the sample group.
Example F: 5, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 12, 12, 12, 14, 15, 19.
The largest number is 19. The maximum is 19.
